HSUS Offers Reward for Dogs Stolen from Shelter
March 19, 2008

AMERICUS, Ga. –- Stepping in to expedite an ongoing investigation, the Humane Society of the United States has offered a reward for information leading to dogs stolen from a Georgia shelter.
The HSUS will reward $2,500 for tips that lead to the identification, arrest and conviction of anyone involved in breaking into the Sumter Humane Society and stealing five of dogs.
On Monday morning, when shelter employees reported to work they learned of the missing dogs and place the time of the crime between 11 p.m. Sunday and 8 a.m. Monday.
The shelter’s director, Jackie Sellers, said the five dogs, of various breeds, were being housed in separate areas throughout the facility.
According to Americus Police Chief James Green, the party responsible jumped the fence and entered the rear of the building and went first into the puppy room.
An elderly Rottweiler, a beagle puppy, a Labrador-mix puppy and two pit bulls were stolen.
The pit bulls were being held in an animal cruelty case made by the Sumter County Sherriff’s Office. The dogs were evidence in a possible dog fighting ring that was uncovered during a drug investigation.
Green suggested the burglary and theft might be related to the drug case.
According to Green, some pens and a water pipe were damaged during the robbery.
Cheryl McAuliffe, Georgia state director for HSUS said she hopes the reward will “encourage anyone who has information about this case to come forward and help us find those responsible for stealing these dogs.”
The Sumter Humane Society is also offering a $500 reward. Anyone with information regarding this case can contact the Americus Police Department at 229-924-3677.
